Instructions:

Stir the sugar with the vinegar until the sugar has dissolved (perhaps heat the vinegar, then it goes faster). Peel cucumber, shave into thin slices, season lightly with salt and set aside. Finely slice carrots as well and set aside, covered. Peel and very finely dice the shallots. Cut the pickled ginger into narrow strips.
